A great turnout for TikTok vs FlipFlop
It was huge fun to do our first joint club tasting with the University of York Whisky Society – an inter-generational sharing of the love of whisky is what we hoped to achieve and we think we hit the nail on the head!
There was a three-way tie for dram of the night between the Arran cask strength Sherry, the Springbank 11yr old local barley, and Loch Lomond 18, incorporating audience & expert IWSC judge voting, courtesy of Amanda from The Whisky Lounge. However, those were by one vote and scoring was fairly split across all drams, in the words of one attendee:
“I’ve been to other tastings where easily, any of those would be dram of the night.”
Overall, a win for team #TikTok (University Society) with their presentation of Ardnamurchan, Arran & Loch Lomond 18. However, lots of love for Team #FlipFlop with a sneaky budget-busting Cardrona Otago Pinot cask bought at a ‘negotiated rate’, a well-received Springbank, and an Sherry Cask from the new Elements of Islay range by Elixir, which delighted the seaside aficionados.
And so to the full dram list:
- Cardrona Day Release – Otago Pinot Cask (52%)
- Ardnamurchan AD/ Core (46.8%)
- Arran Sherry Cask The Bodega (55.8%)
- Springbank 11 Local Barley (55.1%)
- Loch Lomond 18 (46%)
- Elements of Islay Sherry Cash (54.5%)
With the team budgets set at £200 each, since both sides used discounts and donations for a combined RRP of £525 – team TikTok came in at £170 so you can probably work out that sneakiness comes with age (!) – overall consensus was that the competition provided amazing value and a knockout set of drams for those attending.
First time attendee Neil (Ethan’s Dad), won the bottle of World Whisky Blend (That Boutique-y Whisky Company) kindly donated by Master of Malt – footnote – all TByW labels are created by the amazing illustrator Emily Chappell.
The winning team were also presented with a bottle of Ardbeg Wee Beastie which seems apt!
