Tasting #11 – Our First Birthday

A huge THANK YOU to all who came to our birthday!

We got the evening off to a sugary start with some birthday cake – a lemon drizzle with added whisky ingredients. As always, we like to give EXTRA so there was a 2nd birthday cake to try which was voted cake of the night – a chocolate & Guiness cake with Glen Scotia Victoriana cream cheese icing.

We also celebrated the people who have made the club what it is, with a special gift for Nat who has attended all tastings – a Ledaig Sinclair Series Rioja Cask Finish (one of our favourites) & a branded Glencairn.

On to the drams tasted:

  1. Glencadam 13 Year Old 2008 Réserve de Sauternes (46%, £70.90)
  2. Hatozaki 12 Year Old Umeshu Cask Finish (46%, £69.99)
  3. Macduff 2007 – 14 Year Old Ruby Port-Finish (Bottled by Mossburn) (56.4%)
  4. Torabhaig Single Malt – Allt Gleann, The Legacy Series 2nd Edition (46%, £55)
  5. Highland Park Cask Strength – Release No.3 (64.1%, £58.90)
  6. Kilchoman Machir Bay Cask Strength / 2021 Edition (58.3%, £58.95)

Another surprise we offered was pairing the Kilchoman with Birch sap, a product with ancient Scottish heritage from Birkentree. Chatting to Euan before the tasting, he talked about Birken (old Scots word for Birch) taking away the burn of cask-strength, not delivering a dilution – such as when you add water – & giving a unique mouthfeel.

All were true & as you might expect for a new way to try whisky, we had a mix of “where can I buy this?” (Shop on their website) & “Not sure…” (Might have to try with more whisky!) We had two cask-strengths & Mikey – who went home with his table’s sap & a spare bottle – said he preferred it with the Highland Park.

Dram of the night was the Macduff – it was great to see it enjoyed by a mix of first time attendees, plus people who’ve enjoyed our tastings before. Steven won the raffled bottle of Hinch 10 which we almost forgot to do (too busy enjoying the drams). Thanks to Kate for grabbing some great photos (below and on our Instagram).

Roll on the rest of year 2!
